Minwaashin Lodge is seeking a part-time Family Therapist with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Social Work or a related discipline, with training and experience in family therapy, art therapy, play therapy child and/or other related therapeutic approaches. We will also consider applications from individuals with relevant undergraduate or post- graduate education with significant professional experience. The part-time Family Therapist is responsible for the development and facilitation of a 9 week family therapy group First Nations, Metis and Inuit families, with four cycles offered per year, to support clients of Minwaashin Lodge and Oshki Kizis Lodge, using contemporary and traditional healing practices, as well as providing family therapy to individual families. This position is part of the Counseling Team and reports directly to the Manager, Counseling Services. Experience working within a VAW context and/or with Indigenous community members is a significant asset.
Develop a family therapy curriculum for a quarterly 9 week family therapy program, following a culture based approach
Create promotional materials to increase knowledge of the program among community members and community workers
Recruit families to participate in the program and conduct intake and assessments with each family to build understanding of their needs and circumstances
Work collaboratively with other counselling team members to offer a virtual or in person 9 week family therapy program, 4 times per year
Provide individual short-term family therapy to families participating in the group family therapy program
Support family healing, cohesion and resiliency, as well as the reclamation of traditional knowledge, through the provision of individual and group culturally based family therapy
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director that are within the specification of the position
Graduate degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology or other relevant discipline, including registration with a corresponding professional body, or relevant undergraduate/post-graduate education with significant work experience.
3 to 5 years working with families in both individual and group settings
Trained and experienced in family group counselling and complimentary therapeutic approaches
Demonstrated ability to creative innovative and traditional cultural programming for Indigenous families
Understanding of child development and experience with children and youth between the ages of 5 and 15 years’ old, particularly in a VAW setting.
Experience with post-traumatic stress, trauma, anxiety, behavior difficulties, grief, bullying, addictions, domestic violence and an understanding of intergenerational impacts of residential schools
A good understanding of the FNIM community and mainstream services in the Ottawa region
A cultural understanding and sensitivity working with FNIM families and children
Excellent time management skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Some evening and week-end work required
Computer skills and literacy
